"Larn Boon" (The Merit Grounds) is a metal sculpture created using materials and fabrication processes identical to those used for sacred Buddha images in Buddhism. The artist borrows the form of the Buddhist alms bowl, manipulating it through stretching, shrinking, contracting, and expanding to create a distorted rendition of the original shape. A coin slot on the lid transforms it into a metaphorical savings box, conveying the notion of accumulation and saving. These modified bowls are arranged upon a raised platform covered in the Kāsāya robe cloth (the saffron cloth of monks), thereby signifying a deliberate separation of the object’s sacred status from ordinary human experience. Furthermore, the gleaming surface of the metallic sculptures—with their curves, concavities, and convex protrusions—creates visual depth by reflecting the surrounding environment in warped and distorted images. The faces and forms of surrounding viewers are captured in these reflections, generating a visual reaction that prompts self-inquiry and introspection concerning the complex, overlapping contexts of Merit and Sin (Boon-Bāp) within contemporary society.
